The Project Story

  • The Challenge: Designing a functional outdoor living space that maximizes the view while safely enclosing different elevations while hiding the structural framing.
  • The Solution: We built a multi-level wood deck featuring a mix of clear glass panels and black metal balusters. We enclosed the underside with a solid, custom-cut wood skirt to deter critters, and installed integrated lighting for night time entertaining.
  • The Outcome: A clean, highly functional backyard upgrade that looks finished from every angle and not only is safe to navigate after dark, but creates a comfortable atmosphere hanging out on the deck at night.

A good deck needs to be more than just a wooden platform; it must fit how you actually use the space. For this build in Whitby, we designed and built a custom multi-level wood deck to redefine the space.

To keep the view open but maintain safety on the upper level, we used clear glass panels on the main sections and heavy-duty black metal balusters for the stairs and side profiles. We didn’t leave the framing exposed, either. We finished the base with a solid wood skirt, custom-cut to fit the grade. This hides the structural posts, keeps critters out from under the deck, and includes a small access door. Finally, we wired in low-voltage lighting along the skirt so the space is safe and usable after the sun goes down. It is a solid, clean build from top to bottom.

Q: Do I Need a Permit for a Deck in Whitby?

  • If the deck is more than 24 inches off the ground or attached directly to the house, it generally requires a permit. We can help you determine the exact requirements for your property and facilitate the permit process for you.

Q: What Is the Best Wood for a Deck?

  • Pressure-treated wood is the most cost-effective choice and requires moderate maintenance. Cedar is a beautiful alternative but demands high maintenance. If you want low maintenance, composite decking is a great option, though it typically costs double or triple the price of a pressure-treated deck.
