We integrated this heavy timber pergola directly into the custom wood deck to provide structural shade and define the outdoor dining area. Whether you need a freestanding pergola or one anchored to your existing deck, we frame the roof structures using proper beam spans and heavy-duty hardware so they never sag, twist, or shift over time.
Pergola Construction Details
A pergola carries a massive amount of top weight and can act like a sail in heavy wind. We secure the main support posts directly into the deck’s underlying structural framing, or sink them deep into dedicated concrete footings for freestanding builds, ensuring they do their job without blowing over.
Wide pergola spans require carefully selected lumber to prevent the top headers from bowing. We properly size all structural headers and rafters, stepping up to heavy pressure-treated timbers or cedar to handle the load across the span.
We customize the top purlins to provide your ideal mix of sun and shade, from tight spacing for maximum coverage to open layouts for climbing vines and open skies. And, if you want, you can hang decor and additional shading to/from the top.
Free-standing pergolas often have different municipal permit requirements than attached deck structures or solid roofs. We will review your specific design and local bylaws to ensure everything is built to code.
