The Project Story

  • The Challenge: Creating privacy around their hot tub without making the space feel boxed in or completely blocking the breeze.
  • The Solution: We built a new wood deck to tie the gazebo area together and integrated a custom privacy screen using spaced horizontal boards.
  • The Outcome: A comfortable, usable space that provides visual separation from the neighbours while keeping the yard open and airy.

With a hot tub, you really want privacy, but you also don’t want to feel like you are sitting inside a wooden box. For this backyard in Brooklin, we built a new deck to tie the space together under the gazebo and added a custom privacy screen along the main sightline.

Instead of a solid wall, we used spaced horizontal boards. This breaks up the visual line to give you the privacy you need, while still letting the breeze through. We anchor the screen directly into the heavy-duty deck framing so it stands rigid against high winds. It is a simple, tailored upgrade that makes the hot tub area feel like a private retreat without closing off the rest of the yard.

Q: Do I Need a Permit for a Privacy Screen in Whitby?

  • If the screen is attached to a deck that requires a permit, it will be included in those plans. As a standalone structure, it generally falls under standard fence height bylaws, but we always verify the specific zoning for your property before building.

Q: How Tall Can a Privacy Screen Be?

  • Standard boundary fences are usually capped at the 2-meter mark, but local by-laws sometimes allow privacy screens to be built taller than that. The exact height allowance depends on your municipality and whether the screen is attached to a deck or standing alone. We verify the specific rules for your yard before we start cutting.
