The Project Story
- The Challenge: Putting the finishing touches on a brand new custom deck by enclosing an otherwise exposed underside. This hinders wildlife from nesting while maintaining access to the usable space beneath it.
- The Solution: We built a custom solid wood deck skirt to match the main decking (that we also built). We framed and installed an access door using quality black hardware.
- The Outcome: A completely finished look that keeps the critters out and transforms the area under the deck into dry, accessible storage.
Leaving the underside of a raised deck exposed just looks unfinished. It also creates a comfortable spot for wildlife to move in. For this build in Ajax, we finished the job right by wrapping the entire base with a solid wood deck skirt.
We don’t just board it up and walk away, though. If you have the elevation, you also have valuable storage space waiting to be claimed. We integrated custom-built access doors directly into the skirting, mounted on heavy-duty hinges. We cut every board to follow the exact grade of the yard, ensuring there are no gaps for critters to squeeze through. It gives the whole deck a clean, grounded look and turns wasted space into secure outdoor storage.

Q: Do I Need a Permit for a Deck Skirt in Ajax?
- Adding a skirt to an existing, code-compliant deck does not typically require a new permit. We can help verify if your current structure meets all local requirements before we start.
Q: What Are the Best Materials for a Deck Skirt?
- We usually match the skirt to your main deck material. Pressure-treated wood is highly durable and cost-effective, whether the design calls for solid boards, spaced slats, or classic lattice.
