The Project Story
- The Challenge: Building a new outdoor living space with enough seating for entertaining, without crowding the deck with too much patio furniture.
- The Solution: We designed and built a custom wood deck and integrated a wrap-around bench right into the corner, anchoring the supports directly into the structural framing.
- The Outcome: A complete, permanent outdoor setup that handles a crowd while leaving the main deck floor completely open for foot traffic, decor, and that coveted BBQ.
If you like to entertain, you know that patio furniture can quickly eat up all a lot of your usable space. For this build in Scarborough, we started from the ground up to create a complete outdoor living area without making it feel crowded. We built a solid pressure-treated wood deck and integrated a custom wrap-around bench right into the corner.
Because we built the entire deck, we were able to easily anchor the bench supports directly into the heavy-duty deck framing, rather than trying to affix something less secure to the surface. This guarantees the structure won’t wobble or sag under the weight of a crowd. It conveniently doubles as a natural boundary for the space while handling the seating you need, leaving the main floor wide open.

Q: Can a Built-In Bench Act as a Deck Guard or Railing?
- It depends on the height of your deck. If the deck is more than 24 inches off the ground, building codes require a specific, compliant guardrail. A bench can be placed in front of it, but it cannot replace a code-compliant safety railing. We verify all of these details before we start cutting any wood.
