The Project Story

  • The Challenge: Enclosing a raised deck to meet safety codes without building a solid barrier that blocks sight-lines into the backyard.
  • The Solution: We installed a mixed railing system, using clear glass panels for the main seating area and solid metal balusters down the stairs.
  • The Outcome: A secure, code-compliant deck perimeter that feels entirely open and preserves the view of the property.

When we build a raised deck, we have to enclose it to meet code, but nobody wants to feel boxed in by a solid wall of wood. For this deck in Pickering, the goal was safety without losing the view of the yard. We used a mixed railing system to get it right.

For the main deck area, we installed heavy-duty black metal frames with clear glass panels. This keeps the sight-lines completely open when you are sitting down. For the stairs, we swapped to solid black metal balusters. We anchor everything directly and securely to the deck framing so there is absolutely no wobble. It is a clean, sturdy setup that meets local building codes and keeps the backyard feeling wide open.

Q: Do I Need a Permit for Deck Railings in Pickering?

  • Railing requirements are strictly tied to the height of your deck. Generally, if your deck is more than 24 inches off the ground, it requires a permit and must have code-compliant railings installed for safety.

Q: What Are the Best Materials for Deck Railings?

  • It depends on your priority. Glass panels are perfect for keeping your view open, while wrought iron or powder-coated metal balusters offer maximum durability with zero maintenance. Wood is a classic option as well. We adapt the design to suit your needs.
