The Project Story
- The Challenge: Building a wide double gate that won’t sag, bind, or feel flimsy after a few months of heavy use, yet is still visually appealing.
- The Solution: We built a custom double-swing wood gate from scratch, tying the anchor posts together with a solid overhead header to prevent the posts from shifting. We finished it with heavy-duty black hardware and wrought-iron diamond inserts to make it pop.
- The Outcome: A strong, smooth-swinging gate that latches tight and is perfectly sized to the opening, completely avoiding the cheap feel of standard kit parts, and improving curb appeal.
A gate gets more hands-on use than any other part of your fence, of course, and if it isn’t built right, it will sag, bind, and stop latching properly after just one season. To address this we don’t use pre-built kit parts. For this project in Pickering, we built a custom wooden double gate specifically sized to the opening and used the appropriate hardware to keep it sturdy.
To make sure a wide double gate like this stays perfectly aligned, we tied the main posts together with a heavy-duty overhead header. This stops the frost from heaving the posts out of square. We used solid black hinges and hardware that can handle the weight, and integrated custom wrought-iron diamond inserts for a beautiful, finished look. It swings smooth, latches tight, and is built to handle heavy everyday use.
