The Project Story

  • The Challenge: Creating a dedicated, shaded outdoor living space that offers privacy from neighboring yards without completely blocking natural light or airflow.
  • The Solution: We built a spacious wood deck and topped it with a custom pergola, integrating slatted horizontal privacy walls directly into the heavy timber framing.
  • The Outcome: A striking architectural focal point that defines the seating area, casts comfortable shade, and provides substantial privacy for the homeowners.

A deck is great, but sitting in the blazing sun all afternoon isn’t for everyone. For this build in Scarborough, we wanted to create a defined outdoor living room that actually offered some relief from the heat. We started by laying down a solid wood deck, then anchored a custom overhead pergola right into the structure.

We built this using heavy timber framing and spaced the roof joists to cast the right amount of shade. To finish the space and block out the sight-lines from the neighbours, we integrated horizontal slatted privacy walls directly between the posts. It gives the yard some serious architectural punch and makes the deck usable even on the hottest days.

Q: Do I Need a Permit for a Pergola in Scarborough?

  • In Toronto and Scarborough, detached pergolas under a certain square footage (usually 108 sq ft) often don’t require a permit. However, if it is attached to your house or part of a raised deck that requires a permit, the rules change. We verify all local zoning requirements before we start digging.

Q: What Are the Best Materials for a Pergola?

  • We typically build with pressure-treated wood, cedar, or painted pine. Pressure-treated is the most durable and cost-effective, while cedar offers a premium look and natural rot resistance. We can help you choose the right fit for your budget and style.
