A multi-level retaining wall project by Flann Fence & Deck reducing soil creep.

The Project Story

  • The Challenge: Steep incline, soil creep, unusable space.
  • The Solution: Tiered pressure-treated wood system, engineered drainage.
  • The Outcome: Functional garden steps, erosion control.

Homeowners with sloped backyards often struggle with ‘soil creep’ and unusable space. For this project in Ajax, the challenge was a steep incline that made gardening difficult and threatened to erode the soil over time.

The Flann Fence & Deck team designed a multi-level solution to reclaim this yard. We installed a tiered retaining wall system using high-quality pressure-treated lumber. Unlike simple planter boxes, these walls were engineered for drainage, ensuring that heavy rains flow away from the structure rather than building up pressure behind the wood.

We integrated sturdy garden steps directly into the design, allowing the homeowners easy access to their new tiered gardens. The result is a functional, beautiful backdrop that stops erosion and adds significant planting space to the property. This structure is built to withstand our harsh Ontario winters and freeze-thaw cycles.
